Jim Thompson was a New York architect who almost single-handedly revived Thailand’s silk industry, employing Thai Muslims as skilled silk weavers.
Thompson’s Thai house contains a splendid collection of Khmer sculpture, Chinese porcelain, Burmese carving (especially a 17th-century teak Buddha), and antique Thai scroll paintings. The nearby Klong San Sap and garden make a lovely spot, especially on a hot day.
You can buy silk from the Jim Thompson Company retail shop at the intersection of Surawong and Rama IV roads.
Suan Lum Night Markets
Bangkok’s newest night market is just east of Lumpini park, not too far from Silom Road. Suan Lum has many Thai trinkets and souvenirs under covered walkways and a few bars, restaurants and a huge covered food court with live bands nightly. Well worth a wander.
