This is our website for:

Bulky items

Bulky items can be included as part of any checked baggage allowance included in your fare, if there is enough space available. The maximum lengths for acceptable bulky items differ depending on the aircraft type.

Size and weight restrictions

Check the aircraft type before booking your flight to make sure your bulky item is within the size restriction. If you’ve already booked and want to add baggage, find the aircraft type on your Jetstar itinerary. Size restrictions:

Domestic and short-haul international A320 or A321 Aircraft – 1.9 meters

International long haul A330 Aircraft and 787** aircraft – 2.77 meters

Length restrictions include packaging. For journeys that contain multiple flights and aircraft types, the lesser limit applies.

Combined weight of your bulky items and baggage must be within your baggage allowance. No single item can weigh more than 32kg.

Pack bulky items appropriately before you arrive at check-in.

Sports equipment

Acceptable items

Acceptable bulky items, subject to size, weight and other restrictions, include surfboards, bicycles, skis, golf clubs and snowboards.

Bicycles

Bicycles must be packed in a bike bag or bike box. Jetstar does not provide boxes or bags, it is your responsibility to prepare your bike for travel.

To travel the bike must have:

  • Deflated tyres
  • Detached pedals
  • Handle bars fixed parallel to the frame
  • A detached front wheel if the bike is longer than 180cm. Fix inside the pack alongside the rear wheel

Tandems, recumbent bicycles and bike trailers that meet requirements can also travel. Fold up bikes can travel and do not need to travel in a bike pack.

If the bike pack constitutes excess baggage, charges will apply.

Surfboards, snowboards and skis

Surfboards, skis and snowboards must be packed in a bag designed for that equipment.

Where possible, remove surfboard fins and store in an enclosed compartment in the bag or tape to the board.

Surfboards, (including the surfboard bag), must not exceed 1.9 metres for Jetstar flights operated by an A320, A321 or B737 aircraft, and 2.77 meters for Jetstar flights operated by an A330 or 787** aircraft.

Some Boeing 787 Dreamliner flights are subject to government and regulatory approval. All Dreamliner routes

Windsurfers (sailboards)

Because the sail mast exceeds length restrictions windsurfers cannot be carried as baggage.

Fishing rods

Fishing rods must be protected for travel. Store in a PVC cylinder with screw ends from a fishing store, PVC plumbing or electrical tubing. Fishing rods must not be strapped to baggage.

Scuba diving equipment

Scuba diving equipment can only be included as checked baggage. It must be prepared as follows:

  • Compressed air/gas tanks must be empty with the regulator tap open
  • Knives must be carried in checked baggage.
  • Spear guns must be unloaded. Pack spears separately and protect with material such as polystyrene

Firearms for hunting and sports

Firearms cannot be carried on flights operated by Jetstar Asia (3K) or Jetstar Japan (GK).

We may agree to carry firearms and ammunition for hunting or sporting purposes as checked-baggage on flights operated by Jetstar (JQ). If we do, these must be packed in accordance with all applicable national and international laws and regulations. Our approval may be withheld at our sole discretion. Applications for the carriage of firearms and ammunition for hunting or sporting purposes must be submitted at least two working days before to your anticipated departure date.
