One of the best parts of flying around New Zealand is the view. So we're helping improve it at places like the Ngati Awa Heritage Estate, where we're supporting the reforestation of 350 hectares of culturally significant land.
Reducing the risk of flooding and erosion
The Ngati Awa Heritage Estate has been heavily degraded due to clearing and overgrazing, resulting in land slippages, erosion and diminished water quality. The site has being replanted with a mixture of native species and exotics and these new trees will soon get the land back the way it was meant to be.
Reducing greenhouse gas emissions
We all know trees are good for the environment, soaking up carbon from the atmosphere in return for fresh oxygen. At Jetstar we already meet our mandatory carbon offsets and instead saw this as opportunity to voluntarily extend our commitment to fresh air and New Zealand, by restoring a slice of New Zealand's spectacular landscape.
Giving Kiwis a safe home
The reforestation project backs onto one of New Zealand's largest kiwi sanctuary's, the Ohope Scenic Reserve, and through partnership with the local council and the Department of Conservation, revegetation at the Ngati Awa Heritage Estate will provide shelter, breeding areas andfood sources for the Kiwis.
Over 3km of new fencing and strategic pest management will keep the new plantation in perfect condition for the little kiwis and other native wildlife to visit.
Support for Ngati Awa
The Ngati Awa Heritage Estate reforestation project is part of a Ngati Awa multi-generational project spanning 100 years, and will generate ongoing economic, educational and tourism benefits for the wider community. This includes looking after many culturally significant archaeological sites dating back over 1000 years and the plantation of kahikatea and totara trees to be used for cultural carving projects.

Fly carbon neutral on your trip
It's inevitable that planes burn fuel and release greenhouse emissions into the atmosphere.
However, you can offset your share of these emissions when you book a Jetstar flight online, and it doesn't cost as much as you may think. For instance, if you fly return from Auckland to Wellington, you can fly carbon neutral for only $1.42.
We then pass this contribution on to the Ngati Awa Heritage Estate, where it supports the reforestation project. This helps prevent land degradation and remove emissions from the atmosphere.
Choose the 'Fly Carbon Neutral' option when you book your next flight.

Here for good
At Jetstar we are concerned about climate change and we take our environmental and social responsibilities seriously. We are working hard to reduce our own environmental footprint through continual improvements to fuel efficiency, electricity consumption and the amount of waste sent to landfill. We also offset all our employee corporate travel.
Our Fly Carbon Neutral programme (as part of the Qantas Group) is the largest airline offset programme in the world. With your help we have offset over 1.8 million tonnes of carbon emissions. This equals 1.8 million Olympic swimming pools of pollution, or the emissions from around 390,000 passenger vehicles.
