Children travelling alone

At Jetstar, we love welcoming young travellers. Because we care about their safety and comfort, and that of all our passengers, we have important requirements for children travelling alone. We’re not able to provide supervision or assistance, because we don’t have the systems, staff or facilities to do so.

Please take note of the requirements below to ensure your child can travel with us independently. If your child does not meet these requirements, they will need to travel with an Accompanying Passenger.

All Jetstar (JQ) operated flights and Jetstar Asia (3K) flights to/from and within Australia and New Zealand

Children who are currently enrolled in or attending secondary school are considered able to travel independently.

The child will need to prove that they are enrolled in or attending secondary school OR that they are over 12 years old. Proof of age for passengers 12 years and over is acceptable because in Australia and New Zealand children 12 years and over are generally required to enrol in secondary school.

One of the following forms of identification must be presented at check-in :

  • For passengers 12 years and over, proof of age such a passport or birth certificate
  • School ID card from a secondary school (can be from a previous year and may be expired)
  • Letter from the secondary school on school letterhead stating the year and confirming current attendance or enrolment in current secondary school (including enrolment in secondary school for the coming year after graduation from primary school)

Children who are not yet enrolled in or attending secondary school will be regarded as unable to travel independently and must be accompanied by an appropriate Accompanying Passenger. Even if your child is enrolled in secondary school, before you book them on a Jetstar flight please consider whether they are sufficiently independent to travel unaccompanied using the services provided by Jetstar. If they aren’t able to travel independently, we are unable to carry them unaccompanied.

Other Jetstar Asia (3K) flights

For Intra-Asia flights operated by Jetstar Asia (3K), passengers below the age of 12 must be accompanied by a passenger who is 15 years of age or older at the time of travel. Passengers aged 12 and above may travel independently.

Jetstar Pacific (BL) flights

For any Domestic or International flights operated by Jetstar Pacific (BL) children below the age of 12 will not be eligible to travel unless they are accompanied by an appropriate Accompanying Passenger.

The parents or guardians of a passenger between the ages of 12 and 14 years must complete and sign a declaration at check-in before a child between these ages can travel unaccompanied.

Jetstar Japan (GK) flights

For any Domestic or International flights operated by Jetstar Japan (GK) children below the age of 12 will not be eligible to travel unless they are accompanied by an appropriate Accompanying Passenger. Passengers aged 12 and above may travel independently.
