Bulky items

You can include oversized items in your checked baggage allowance, provided each piece is packed correctly and does not exceed more than 32kg. If you’re travelling with an item that exceeds 32kg, it will need to travel as freight. Please note, there are specific requirements for musical instruments (see below).

The maximum size your baggage can be depends on the limitations of the plane you’re flying on. Our fleet includes a range of different aircraft types, all of which have slightly different limitations on the weight and size of baggage they can carry.

Check the carrier and aircraft type before booking your flights to make sure your oversized item is within our size limits. Please note, the length restrictions below include the packaging of the oversized item.

Oversized baggage size limits

Carrier

Aircraft type

Maximum length

Jetstar Airways (JQ), Jetstar Asia (3K)
and Jetstar Japan (GK)

A320, A321 and Q300

2.3m

Jetstar Pacific (BL)

A320, A321

2.0m

Jetstar Airways (JQ)

787

2.77m

For journeys with multiple carriers and aircraft types, the lowest maximum length applies. The combined weight of your oversized items and baggage must be within your checked baggage allowance or excess baggage fees will apply.

We will make all reasonable efforts to load your oversized items on the same flight as you, however we cannot guarantee this due to loading restrictions that may apply to your flight.

Sports equipment

Acceptable items

Acceptable bulky items, subject to size, weight and other restrictions, include surfboards, bicycles, skis, golf clubs and snowboards.

Bicycles

Bicycles must be packed in a bike bag or bike box. Jetstar does not provide boxes or bags, it is your responsibility to prepare your bike for travel.

To travel the bike must have:

  • Deflated tyres
  • Detached pedals
  • Handle bars fixed parallel to the frame
  • A detached front wheel if the bike is longer than 180cm. Fix inside the pack alongside the rear wheel

Tandems, recumbent bicycles and bike trailers that meet requirements can also travel. Fold up bikes can travel and do not need to travel in a bike pack.

If the bike pack constitutes excess baggage, charges will apply.

Surfboards, snowboards and skis

Surfboards, skis and snowboards must be packed in a bag designed for that equipment.

Where possible, remove surfboard fins and store in an enclosed compartment in the bag or tape to the board.

Surfboards, (including the surfboard bag), must not exceed 1.9 metres for Jetstar flights operated by an A320, A321 or Q300 aircraft, and 2.77 meters for Jetstar flights operated by 787 aircraft.

Windsurfers (sailboards)

Because the sail mast exceeds length restrictions windsurfers cannot be carried as baggage.

Fishing rods

Fishing rods must be protected for travel. Store in a PVC cylinder with screw ends from a fishing store, PVC plumbing or electrical tubing. Fishing rods must not be strapped to baggage.

Scuba diving equipment

Scuba diving equipment can only be included as checked baggage. It must be prepared as follows:

  • Compressed air/gas tanks must be empty with the regulator tap open
  • Knives must be carried in checked baggage.
  • Spear guns must be unloaded. Pack spears separately and protect with material such as polystyrene

Firearms for hunting and sports

Firearms cannot be carried on flights operated by Jetstar Asia (3K) or Jetstar Japan (GK).

We may agree to carry firearms and ammunition for hunting or sporting purposes as checked-baggage on Jetstar (JQ) flights. If we do, these must be packed in accordance with all applicable national and international laws and regulations. Our approval may be withheld at our sole discretion. Applications for the carriage of firearms and ammunition for hunting or sporting purposes must be submitted at least two working days before to your anticipated departure date.

You may carry the instrument in the cabin but must purchase a seat for it.

The case must have a handle so it can be strapped to a seat and secured safely.

Instruments that exceed these requirements must be checked in and will form part of your checked baggage allowance. If your instrument must travel in a seat, make your booking by contacting customer service.
