Carbon offset

Overview and introduction

Note: The Carbon Offset Program introduced hereunder in the Vietnamese website of http://www.jetstar.com/vn/en/home relates to the program managed by Jetstar Pacific (BL) in Vietnam and for Jetstar Pacific flights only. If you are interest in the program managed by Jetstar Airways (JQ) in Australia and for Jetstar Airways’ flights, please refer to the Australian website of http://www.jetstar.com/au/en/home.

At Jetstar Pacific, we are concerned about the issue of climate change and are committed to actively managing our operations and growth in an environmentally sustainable manner.

We believe we have a role to play in helping to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and are continually striving to improve the efficiency of our operations, and to reduce our impact on the environment.

We are now pleased to be able to offer you the opportunity to join us in reducing the impact of greenhouse gas emissions on the environment by offering a Carbon Offset Program that enables you to offset your share of the greenhouse gas emissions caused by your flight(s). This program has been accredited under the Vietnam Environment Protection Fund’s initiative.

What is aviation’s impact on climate change?

The burning of fuel used by aircraft engines results in carbon dioxide and other substances being released into the atmosphere. Aviation is a relatively small contributor of greenhouse gases. However, predicted industry growth mean this contribution amount is likely to rise.

The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) which was set up by the United Nations and the World Meteorological Organisation, the foremost global authority on the issue, has confirmed that aviation currently contributes 2% of global carbon dioxide emissions. The IPCC forecasts that aviation’s emissions could rise to 3% by 2050.

While power generation and road transport remain the principal sources of greenhouse gases, individual airlines and the aviation industry as a whole are conscious of their impact and committed to doing everything possible to address the climate change issue.

What is Jetstar Pacific doing to address climate change?

The Jetstar Pacific Carbon Offset Program is just one way in which Jetstar Pacific is managing the environmental impact of its operations. Jetstar Pacific plans to replace its current fleet with modern fuel-efficient A320 aircraft, and has established a fuel efficiency program to continuously monitor fuel consumption and identify opportunities for improving efficiency; leading to reduced fuel consumption and greenhouse gas emissions.

Jetstar Pacific is focused on the implementation of several conservation strategies relating to energy, water, and waste usage across all facets of its operation and as an ongoing commitment to the environment, will also purchase carbon offsets on behalf of all staff travelling on company business.

How can you help?

Through Jetstar Pacific’s Carbon Offset Program, you as a customer are able to reduce the impact your individual flight has on the environment by offsetting your share of the emissions associated with your flight(s) on a voluntary basis when booking your travel.

If you choose to offset your flight(s), your contribution will be directed towards environment protection projects of the Vietnam Environment Protection Fund.

How do I purchase carbon offsets for my flight?

You will be asked if you wish to offset your flight(s) at the time that you make your booking. When booking on-line, all you have to do is tick the box that appears during the booking process. The cost of offsetting your flight(s) will be added to the total cost of your booking and will be itemised on your itinerary receipt.

How does Jetstar Pacific calculate the amount of carbon emissions from my flight?

To accurately calculate the emissions associated with passenger flights on each of the city pair combinations offered across our network we have used information put together by our partner airline, Jetstar Airways (Australia) as part of a comprehensive greenhouse gas life cycle assessment of the emissions associated with their operations. This life cycle assessment was independently verified by the Australian Government’s Department of Climate Change as part of the certification process that enabled Jetstar to achieve Greenhouse Friendly™ accreditation.

We have used this information as a basis for our own assessment of emissions for Jetstar Pacific. By identifying similar route patterns to the routes analyzed by Jetstar we have been able to estimate the amount of carbon emissions for each seat on each Jetstar Pacific route

How does Jetstar Pacific calculate the payment amount required to offset the carbon emissions from my flight?

The cost of purchasing credits from accredited abatement providers is applied to the passenger emission figure for the city pair on which you are flying in order to determine the amount that is required to offset your flight(s). This is the amount that will be directed to the purchase of carbon offsets on your behalf.

Jetstar Pacific has implemented a simplified tiered pricing structure for our carbon offset program in order to provide an innovative option for our passengers within the normal flight booking process, and to avoid the additional transaction costs associated with the carbon offset programs offered by some of our competitors. As such, the price points for our carbon offsets reflect volume-weighted average prices for flights with similar emission characteristics (which include the length of the flight sector(s), and historical passenger numbers on specific city pairs).

Jetstar Pacific will not make any profit from Carbon Offset transactions. All funds contributed by passengers to Jetstar Pacific’s Carbon Offset Program (net of VAT) will be directed towards the Vietnam Environment Protection Fund for its relevant projects.

What programs will offsetting my flying support?

If you choose to offset your flight(s), your contribution will be directed towards environment protection projects of the Vietnam Environment Protection Fund. Examples of the type of abatement activities that may be approved by the Fund include energy efficiency measures, waste diversion and recycling, generation of renewable energy and avoided deforestation projects.

Frequently asked questions (FAQs)

What are greenhouse gases?

Most greenhouse gases naturally exist in the earth’s atmosphere, helping to keep the planet within a comfortable temperature range. However, by burning fossil fuels such as coal and oil, people have increased the concentration of these gases in the atmosphere.

What is global warming?

Greenhouse gases trap the heat of the sun in the earth’s atmosphere. Many prominent scientific groups have concluded that global warming is occurring because of the increase in production of these gases by human activity, and that this is contributing significantly to climate change.

What is carbon offsetting?

Carbon offsetting allows individuals and businesses to account for the amount of greenhouse gas they are responsible for emitting into the atmosphere by either preventing other greenhouse gas from entering the atmosphere or removing an equivalent volume of greenhouse gas from the atmosphere. Typically offsetting is achieved by contributing to projects that prevent greenhouse gas production or remove greenhouse gas from the atmosphere. Carbon offsetting projects can include tree planting, energy efficiency measures and renewable energy projects.

Is carbon offsetting a compulsory tax on my flight?

No. Carbon offsetting your flight with Jetstar is an entirely voluntary contribution.

Can I contribute more towards offsetting than what has been calculated?

Not at this stage. Currently you can only pay to offset the particular flight you are booked on.

Can I offset some flights in my booking but not others?

No. If you choose to offset your flights in a multiple sector booking, you must offset all of the individual flight sectors booked in that transaction.

Can I get a receipt for my contribution?

Yes, when you purchase a carbon offset, your flight itinerary will include a receipt for the carbon offset component of your flights(s).

Is there a credit card transaction fee associated with my contribution?

No. Because the purchase of carbon offsets takes place within the flight booking process, there are no additional transaction fees associated with offsetting your emissions with Jetstar.
