Travel requirements can change at short notice, always check government websites for the latest information before booking and departure.

For travel to Japan, countries have been split into 3 categories: Blue, Yellow and Red. Currently, Australia is listed as a ‘Blue’ (low risk) country.

Visa requirements

Visa free travel is currently suspended. If you are an Australian passport holder, you will need to obtain a visa before travelling to Japan. Travel for tourism is limited to travellers from ‘Blue’ countries who have organised package tours. The company who is running your organised tour of Japan must provide documentation to support your visa application. Learn more

Vaccination

Vaccination requirements vary based on the given colour category of your departure country. You can learn more on the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Japan website.

COVID-19 testing

From 00:00 AM/12:00am (Japan Standard Time - JST) on 7 September, 2022, if you hold a valid vaccination certificate (eg 3 doses of an approved vaccine) you are not required to show a negative pre-departure COVID-19 test result to enter Japan.

If you do not have a valid vaccination certificate, you will still need to show a negative COVID-19 test result at airport check-in before you board.

Have you recently had COVID-19?

If a pre-departure COVID-19 test is required and you cannot provide a negative COVID-19 test due to a past infection, you may be able to travel by getting an exemption in advance. If you’re a Japanese passport holder, a permanent resident with re-entry visas, or a foreign passport or visa holder with special (humanitarian or other) circumstances, we recommend you contact the nearest Japanese Consulate for the latest advice on obtaining a COVID-19 testing exemption.

Please note, a past-positive exemption may not be available if you’re travelling to Japan on a tourist visa.

Once you have contacted the Japanese Consulate, you will also need to submit a past positive medical clearance with Jetstar. You will need to submit this clearance at least 24 hours before your flight so make sure you plan ahead. Past positive medical clearance requests cannot be actioned at the airport on your day of departure.

MySOS – This app allows you to complete documents required for travel, such as the health questionnaire. You can also upload your test results and vaccination certificate.
