Best laidback dining: The Treehouse on Belongil has excellent wood-fired pizza, a great à la carte menu as well as its own beer on tap. The vibe is funky with lounges and booths.

Best cheap eat: Asia Joe's in Bay Lane serves inexpensive, quick, tasty and fresh South East Asian food.

Best brunch: Harvest Café is a 15-minute drive into the hinterland. Its French pastries, great coffee and delicious food are worth the trip. Visit The Harvest Deli next door too.

A secret spot: Away from the bustle of Byron Bay in East Ballina is The Belle General. They have delicious, fresh and healthy food and smoothies, good coffee and a relaxed atmosphere.

For local produce: Sample the Thursday-night market menu at The Byron at Byron. Each Thursday morning the head chef goes to the local farmers market to source local produce for the evening menu.

Must-try sweets: Head to Naked Treaties for amazing raw, organic, sugar-, gluten- and dairy-free desserts. The Cranberry Ripe and the tiramisu are favourites.

About Rae's: We're an iconic hotel and restaurant with the most beautiful dining room on the east coast of Australia. Overlooking Wategos Beach, you're in for an intimate fine dining experience with excellent service. I took over the kitchen in November 2014 and it's incredibly rewarding to receive the great feedback we get from happy customers. Watch the waves roll in at sunset from Rae's on Wategos opens in new window dining room (6-8 Marine Parade, Byron Bay).
