Cebu is not your average tropical-island paradise. Sure, its divine beaches and incredible diving are the main attraction (and rightly so), but its historical sites and stunning waterfalls take it to the next level. Throw in some great shopping and amazing festivals, and your next holiday awaits!
The stunningly beautiful Kawasan Falls live up to the legend.
You're never far from a waterfall in Cebu – there are hundreds! The south, especially, is a waterfall wonderland. Don't miss the super-famous Kawasan Falls, a multi-level marvel renowned for its 'Gatorade blue' water and gorgeous tropical setting. Swim in its pools (go early to avoid the crowds) or join a canyoneering tour. Hike a lush leafy trail to the beautiful Dao Falls or hire a guide and go cliff-jumping at Kabutongan Falls. The magical Cambais Falls and nearby Montpellier Falls aren't as well known – you may even have them to yourself.
Cebu's beaches give the word 'paradise' a new meaning!
Grab your towel and hit one of Cebu's countless sublime beaches! Succumb to the laidback vibe of idyllic Bantayan Island, with its white-sand beaches, crystalline water and fresh seafood. Dive among diverse and colourful marine life on Mactan and Malapascua Islands, and enjoy the surreal wonder of swimming with millions of sardines at Moalbal! Bohol has beaches for all tastes: lively tourist favourites, secluded palm-fringed paradises, perfect snorkelling spots. (It's also home to the teeny-tiny, endangered tarsier monkey, which you can see at a couple of protected sanctuaries).
The Basilica del Santo Niño is central to Cebu's colonial history.
The Philippines' oldest Catholic church, the Basilica Minore del Santo Niño is worth visiting for its historic and cultural significance, even if you're not religious. Join the queue of devotees to view a statue of Cebu's much-loved patron saint, the Christ Child (Santo Niño), which Portuguese explorer Ferdinand Magellan presented to a local chief and his wife upon their baptism in 1521 – while you wait, you can admire the church's grand interior! Make sure you stop by Magellan's Cross while you're there: housed in a magnificent gazebo near the Basilica, it's also a celebrated Cebu icon.
