Ala Moana Center

Ala Moana opens in new window is the world’s largest “open-air” shopping centre, offering a rewarding high-density shopping experience. There are 290 stores, straddling both the luxury and affordable ends of the market, and plenty of food options to top up your shopping stamina.

Big US department stores such as Macy’s, Neiman Marcus and Nordstrom can be found here, as well as Japanese department store Shirokiya and its massive Japanese food court. The new Ewa Wing opened in November last year (check out the Agent Provocateur store) with Bloomingdale’s and Zara set to open later this year.

OPENING HOURS:
Mon-Sat 9.30am-9pm; Sun 10am-7pm.

Waikele Premium Outlets

Many people travel to Hawaii with a near-empty suitcase thanks to Oahu’s excellent outlet shopping opens in new window. Even with a less favourable exchange rate, you can still do well on basics and designer discount items.

There are 50 outlet stores at Waikele, including Banana Republic, Calvin Klein, Saks Fifth Avenue, Barneys, True Religion jeans, Kate Spade and Michael Kors. There is a great selection of children’s discount shops, too, including Osh Kosh B’gosh and Tommy Hilfiger Kids. Teens will love the Vans, Skechers and Asics outlets.

OPENING HOURS:
Mon-Sat 9am-9pm; Sun 10am-6pm.

HOW TO GET THERE: Roberts Hawaii operates the Waikele Outlet Shopping Shuttle, picking up passengers from stops in Waikiki from 9am daily. Included in your fare is a VIP coupon book. robertshawaii.com

Ward Village Shops

There are more than 150 shops at Ward Village opens in new window, but the biggest drawcard is Nordstrom Rack, which sells designer clothing and accessories at up to 70 per cent off the retail price. The dress racks alone are mind-boggling, with everything packed in tight by size, not brand. It makes for a colourful and often frustrating mess to trawl through. Still, it’s worth the effort for bargain hunters with patience.

Then there is the shoe section, where brands include Steve Madden, Stuart Weitzman and Betsey Johnson. Those with smaller-than-average feet will have the most choice (and, ultimately, the most jealousy coming their way).

OPENING HOURS:
Mon-Sat 10am-9pm; Sun 10am-6pm.
