Destination weddings have seen a surge in popularity, with more and more couples drawn by the allure of barefoot beach weddings or clifftop ceremonies in faraway locales. Along with the novelty of turning your wedding into a group holiday for your nearest and dearest, a destination wedding can deliver a Champagne wedding on a wine-cask budget.

If a destination wedding has your heart aflutter, Thailand has been firmly established as one of Asia’s leading locations for romance – having been named Travel + Leisure India and South Asia’s Best Wedding Destination for five years running.

When South Australian couple Renee Tylor and Rodolfo Bernardo decided to tie the knot, Thailand was their first choice. “The culture, the food, the people, the scenery and beaches – it has something for everyone,” says Renee. “People could travel on a budget if they wanted but it also offers opulent resorts and experiences for honeymooners wanting a bit extra out of the trip.”

After experiencing frustrations arranging their wedding long distance, they enlisted the services of Australian-based planning service Wedding Destinations, who helped them realise their dream do at The Intercontinental Samui Baan Taling Ngam Resort in spectaular Koh Samui. The experience surpassed even their greatest expectations.

“Until we had experienced a destination wedding we just thought it would be like any other wedding. How wrong we were!” says Renee. “The vibe of the trip was exciting, fun and relaxed; all at the same time. To spend the days leading up to the wedding day with family and friends was priceless. We spent many happy hours by the resort pool, dined at fabulous restaurants and experienced the best of Thailand – all surrounded by loved ones. By the time the wedding day came around we were all one big tight-knit group who had bonded over a memorable holiday. Then add to that the amazing wedding at the dreamiest of locations, it is truly an experience none of us will forget.” The wedding party was so enamoured, they’re planning a five-year reunion in Koh Samui.
