Oversized baggage

We understand that not everyone’s things fit neatly into a suitcase, however, if you’re bringing large checked baggage items, an oversized item handling fee may apply. Oversized items will count towards your total checked baggage weight, so make sure you purchase enough checked baggage. If your oversized item is required for mobility or medical reasons, or you’re bringing a pram or other items for your infant or child, it won’t count as part of your checked baggage weight and you won’t be charged the oversize item fee. See below for details.

Oversized items

Any bag or item with a single side longer than one metre (1000mm, 39in), including wheels, handles and packaging is an oversized item. You will need to pay the oversized item handling fee for equipment such as: Any oversized assistive devices, mobility aids, medical equipment and infant items can be checked in for free.

Oversized item fee

The oversized item fee is a separate handling fee that applies to any item with a single side longer than one metre (1000mm, 39 inches). The oversized item fee does not apply to oversized assistive devices, mobility aids, medical equipment and infant items. If you choose to bring any oversized items, you pay the fee per item, per flight. Each passenger can bring up to two oversized items. Remember, the oversized item fee is paid in addition to any checked baggage allowance, it does not increase your baggage allowance.

Paying the oversized item fee

The easiest way to pay the oversized item fee is to add it to your fare when you purchase checked baggage as part of your booking. You can also pay the oversized item fee after you book, at Manage booking or through the Call Centre. It will save you time at the airport if you pay the fee before you arrive.
At the airport you’ll need to pay the fee before you take your items to the oversized baggage counter.
Please note: the oversized item fee is non-refundable.

*For Jetstar Japan (GK) passengers, the oversized item fee is more expensive when paid at the airport. Please see Excess baggage charges at the airport. The oversized item handling fee is a separate handling fee, paid per item and does not add any extra weight to your checked baggage allowance. Make sure you have purchased enough checked baggage allowance to cover both your standard baggage and oversized items. The fee does not apply to mobility and assistive devices, medical equipment and infant items. When traveling on multiple Jetstar carriers, the highest fee will apply.

Oversized items and checked baggage weight

The weight of your oversized items counts towards your total checked baggage weight. Make sure you purchase enough checked baggage to cover your standard baggage and any oversized items. Assistive devices, mobility aids, medical equipment and infant items do not count towards your baggage allowance.

Maximum weight

No single bag or item can weigh more than 32kg, even if your checked baggage allowance is 35kg or 40kg. If you have a bag or oversized item that’s heavier than 32kg you’ll have to send it as freight. Maximum length

The maximum length of any oversized item depends on the type of aircraft and service. You can find the aircraft type you’re flying on when you book, on the Choose flights page – just open the details link in the flight listing. The aircraft type is also listed on your itinerary.

Medical equipment, mobility aids and infant items

The weight of the following items does not count towards your total checked-baggage weight, and if they are oversized you won’t be charged the oversized item fee.
  1. Mobility aids – manual and electric wheelchairs
    If you require a mobility aid such as a wheelchair or mobility scooter, you can bring one motorised mobility aid (including electric wheelchairs) and one other mobility aid for free as checked baggage.
  2. Assistive devices – walkers, crutches and travel oxygen
    If you need to use an assistive device such as a walking frame, crutches, CPAP machine, or travel oxygen, you can bring any number of these devices for free as checked baggage.

  1. Items for infants and young children
    If you’re travelling with infants or children you can bring a portable cot, highchair, booster seat, infant car seat, pram and stroller for free as checked baggage.

Flights with Jetstar partner airlines

If your Jetstar flight connects to or from a flight with one of our partner airlines and is on the same booking reference, the oversized item fee will not apply.
Check your itinerary for details. Make sure when you transfer to another airline you follow their checked baggage policy.

Fragile items

The oversized item fee doesn’t provide any extra protection for your baggage. We strongly recommend that you don’t bring any valuable or easily damaged items as part of your checked baggage, see What to leave out of your checked baggage for details.
