Mums to be
Travelling when you’re pregnant can be safe as well as enjoyable. At Jetstar we welcome mums-to-be and have lots of information, ideas and tips for making your flight as safe and comfortable as possible.
When can I fly?
Mums-to-be who are 28 weeks pregnant or over need to carry a certificate or letter from a registered doctor or registered midwife, dated no more than 10 days prior to travel confirming:
- the estimated date of delivery;
- whether it is a single or multiple pregnancy;
- that there are no complications with the pregnancy
The certificate or letter must be available on request and be carried with you at the airport and during the flight in your cabin baggage.
If you have experienced complications or are expecting multiple births we recommend that you speak to your doctor before booking as you will need to obtain medical clearance prior to travel. Most experts strongly advise against flying during the last 2-3 weeks of your pregnancy.

X-rays and your baby
When you and your baby pass through security you go through a metal detector, not an x-ray machine. Only your luggage and personal effects are x-rayed.
Tips for comfy flying
If you’re a mum-to-be there are lots of things you can do to make your flight more comfortable and ensure that you arrive relaxed and rested. Let’s face it; if you depart looking and feeling fabulous you want to arrive that way too.
- If you have ever thought about treating yourself to a StarClass seat, now is the time. Especially if it is a long haul flight.
- Think about breaking up a long haul with a stopover; a chance to rest comfortably and move around freely.
- Request an aisle seat. You can get out of your seat as often as you like without feeling like you are disturbing other passengers. Try to avoid meal times and be aware of turbulence.
- You can alleviate swelling in your feet and legs by moving around the cabin regularly and doing some simple stretches.
- Support stockings can reduce swelling.
- For comfort take your shoes off on-board, remembering that your feet are likely to swell up. Open shoes or slip-ons might make life easier.
- Stay hydrated and pack your own snacks if you are concerned that you might have morning sickness or nausea.
- Some women recommend ginger for airsickness. Take some ginger teabags in your hand luggage.
- For comfort and safety wear your seatbelt below your belly, around your hips.
- There are more bathrooms at the rear of our planes than at the bulkheads.
- There are a number of diseases you cannot be inoculated against when you’re pregnant. If you are travelling overseas, we recommend that you seek medical advice before you book.
- Some countries limit the entry of foreign mums-to-be. Before you book you international flight you should check with the relevant consulate.
- Don’t request a seat in an emergency exit row if you’re a mum-to-be. For safety reasons we’ll probably have to allocate you another seat. The exit rows to avoid are 11/12/13 ABC on A320 aircraft, and 44 ABJK on A330s.
Babymoons are on the rise. Parents-to-be are seizing the opportunity to have a romantic, restful break together, before the couple becomes a family.
The ideal time for mums to take the pregnant pause can be during the second trimester, or early in the third. Any earlier and morning sickness could take the sheen off your brekky in bed. Jetstar strongly advises against flying from the start of your 36th week.
This last hurrah before life becomes smelly nappies and sleepless nights can take many forms. Winery tours, bungee jumping and spa baths might be out but pre-natal massages, facials, pedicures and other pampering is definitely in. As are comfy mattresses, soft pillows, late checkouts and calling ’womb service’ for pickles and ice cream.
