Hot springs, temples and hilltop castle

Shikoku's biggest city, Matsuyama is a captivating destination with a superb historic castle, Japan's oldest onsen, and the most impressive of the island's 88 sacred temples. As well as being famed for its cherry blossoms, its proud literary history has inspired many haiku masters.

  • Head up to Matsuyama Castle via cable car for its rich history and superb vistas
  • Soak in the hot springs of Dōgo Onsen Honkan, Japan's oldest bathhouse
  • Visit Shikoku's most famous temple Ishite-ji and its memorable caves
  • Learn about the life and work of Matsuyama-born poet Masaoka Shiki at Shiki Memorial Museum
