Ski resorts, onsen and, of course, beer

Complementing Hokkaido's magnificent, vast wilderness, Sapporo is the northern island's dynamic capital. As well as a gateway to the region's famous ski resorts and onsen, Japan's fifth-largest city is all about food, festivals, nightlife and, of course, beer.

Fun things to do: Sapporo

  • Marvel at ice-sculpture masterpieces at the Sapporo Snow Festival in February
  • Sample beers and learn about Japan's oldest brewery at Sapporo Beer Museum
  • Ski the same slopes used in the '72 Winter Olympics at nearby Mt Teine
  • Stroll Odori Park to admire city landmarks and snack on street food
  • Slurp down ramen and feast on snow crab among other local specialities
