Japan's snowiest city, on nature's doorstep

The gateway to northern Hokkaido, Asahikawa is a relaxed entry point that lands you within close range to its mountains, forests and hot springs. The island's second largest city is a handy base to explore the area, its delicious food, winter festival and array of sights.

Fun things to do: Asahikawa

  • Be dazzled by the intricacy of the ice sculptures at the annual winter festival
  • Head out hiking before soaking in hot springs at nearby Daisetsuzan National Park
  • Taste some of Japan's finest sakes at Otokoyama Sake Brewery Museum
  • Take the train north to Wakkanai, Japan's northernmost city where you can sight Russia
