Northern Australia is prone to extreme and dangerous wildfires. Every year Indigenous rangers use traditional fire management practices to conduct early season dry burns, preventing larger uncontrolled wildfires. Our investment in Arnhem Land Fire Abatement Northern Territory (ALFA NT) projects supports activities that help reduce emissions that would otherwise be released by uncontrolled wildfires. It also supports Indigenous economic development through our commitment in our Reconciliation Action Plan.

Large areas of tropical rainforest in Papua New Guinea are under threat of deforestation and degradation. Our investment in the April Salumei Rainforest Community Conservation Project helps protect an area of rainforest in PNG where logging was permitted. The project gives local land groups and communities the opportunity to earn revenue from carbon credits instead of logging activities. Not only does this help prevent millions of tonnes of greenhouse gas emissions being released through logging, it secures vital wildlife habitat and supports local communities.

Increasing energy needs in developing countries are contributing to deforestation, reducing a forest's ability to absorb carbon from the atmosphere. Our investment in the World Vision Clean Cookstove projects helps fund the distribution of energy-efficient cook stoves to farming families in rural Ethiopia that currently use open fires to cook. The cook stoves reduce air pollution, emit less black soot and methane, and reduce deforestation.
