Quickest routes to Cradle Mountain :
Devonport via Sheffield 1.25 hours
Burnie via B18& 132 highways 1.5 hours
Launceston via A1 highway & Sheffield 2 hours
Launceston via A1 highway & Mole Creek 2.5 hours
Hobart via Launceston & Sheffield 4.5 hours
Hobart via Queenstown 6 hours
The above routes are mainly on arterial highways. If you have the time, Tasmania has lots of interesting little towns which have now been by-passed by these highways.
The entrance to Cradle Mountain Highlanders is 1.5 km before the entrance to Cradle Mountain National Park on the 132 highway. The cottages cannot be seen from the roadside; only a hand carved sign saying 'HIGHLANDERS' is situated on the right hand side of the road just past Cradle Information Centre (Shuttle bus terminus) and café bistro which is on your left. Drive up the laneway and you will find reception.
Check-in is between 2.30 p.m. and 5.00 p.m. If you plan on arriving outside these times, please give us a call and let us know. Check-out is 10.00 am.
Our water supply comes from an underground aquifer and the drinking quality is excellent.
There are restaurants in the area: Cradle Mountain Hotel has an a la carte restaurant and Peppers Cradle Mountain Lodge has a Tavern Bar/Bistro and an a la carte restaurant. The Wilderness Village hosts Hellyers Restaurant. The restaurants are just a few minutes drive from Highlanders. There is also a café at the Information Centre 200 metres from our driveway.
The Hotel also has a wilderness photography gallery which is worth a look.
Whilst we do not have a restaurant, we have a good selection of wine and beer at reasonable prices available from reception.
Shopping is very limited in this area. Unless you are planning to dine out at the Lodge or Hotel we recommend you stock up on fresh food before you arrive. Sheffield and Rosebery are the last shopping towns; Sheffield if coming from Launceston, Devonport or Hobart, and Roseberry if coming from Strahan or Queenstown.
The Cradle Mountain area's weather is known for its unpredictability. Even in summer it is a good idea to bring clothes that you can layer, a spare pair of walking shoes, a warm jumper and something wind and rainproof.
